Local people believe that a diamond Businessman from Africa came Surat with diamond cutters with him in 1901 and established what we see a sparkling Surat diamonds today. Initially Surat Diamonds industry started as cottage , but with changing time and growing business Surat Diamonds took shape world’s biggest diamonds cutting and polishing industry. Though, Surat does not produce a single Diamond but because of strong skilled workers Surat has snatched polishing and cutting of diamonds from Belgium and Israel. Surat Diamonds mainly consists of Small and medium scale firms. There are hundreds of firms involved in the industry.Surat diamonds is production centers while Mumbai is Diamond export center.
